The trick to keeping these burgers together without using egg (as is traditional) is to squeeze all the water out of thawed frozen spinach and break it apart to fully incorporate it with the beans.

- 1 (14.5-ounce) can black soybeans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (10-ounce) package frozen spinach, thawed and well drained
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 avocado, quartered, pitted, peeled, and cut into slices

Place the soybeans in a large bowl and use a fork to roughly mash them. (You want to leave some part of the bean intact; the consistency should be rough, not pureed.)

Place small pieces of spinach on top of the beans. Use the fork to combine the ingredients. Stir in the tomato paste, salt, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder.
